Ways to Prevent Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies are unexpected oral health problems that require immediate attention. Some of the most common dental emergencies that people need to deal with are broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, and loose teeth. Here are ways to prevent them:

Brush and Floss Your Teeth Regularly

The best way to prevent an emergency is to practice good habits, so problems never arise in the first place. This includes brushing your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Flossing at least once a day will remove plaque and food particles that may be stuck between teeth and cause pain and inflammation.

Avoid Sugary Food and Drink

Eat sugary foods in moderation, and drink water after you eat to help wash the sugar away. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to prevent plaque buildup that leads to cavities. If you do eat a sugary snack or drink, brush your teeth within 30 minutes afterward to remove as much sugar as possible.

Even baby teeth should be brushed twice daily. Use a soft toothbrush for infants and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Remember to never put a baby to bed with a bottle that contains anything but water because it can cause tooth decay. Also, don’t allow your child to graze on food throughout the day because this disrupts their natural balance of eating at meal times and can contribute to cavities.

Call for Regular Checkups

The best way to avoid dental emergencies or permanent damage is to visit the dentist regularly for checkups and cleans. At these appointments, our dentist will be able to spot problems in the early stages and advise you on how to minimize them.

By visiting us every six months for regular checkups, you can help prevent a wide range of issues that could otherwise cause pain, discomfort, and even tooth loss.

See Your Dentist Immediately if You Have a Dental Emergency

When you have a dental emergency, see your dentist as soon as possible. Often, dentists can see you the day you call or the next day. If you call after hours, you’ll likely hear instructions on how to handle the situation until you can see the dentist. You may be able to receive the treatment you need from the dentist over the phone. If the issue requires further care, a dentist may refer you to a specialist for treatment.
