5 New Year's Resolutions for a Healthy Smile

Posted by DR. CHRISTINE Y. LEE on Jan 23 2021, 10:33 AM

As we enter a new year, we make resolutions to stand by to improve our quality of life and stay disciplined by sticking to routines. While hitting the gym, going for evening runs, or cutting down on carbs, etc., are common resolutions, we tend to ignore the importance of dental health. Good dental health not only means shiny white teeth but, in fact, translates to good overall physical health.

  • Two Minutes of Brushing Twice a Day

The golden rule to maintaining optimum oral health is to brush your teeth twice a day - once when you wake up and the second time before you go to bed. It doesn’t stop at that. For maximum benefit, you would have to brush for two whole minutes.

  • Master the Skill of Flossing

Flossing seems like a simple task - pull a string of thread between teeth and move it in different directions. However, flossing is a skill you must learn and master. This year, take a good look at the step-by-step guide on how to floss by the American Dental Association and become a pro.

  • Limit Your Sugar and Eat Lots of Fruits and Vegetables

When you eat sugary foods, some particles stay behind and react with the saliva and bacteria in the mouth to form plaque on the teeth. With time, plaque dissolves the tooth enamel - leading to cavities. So, avoid eating sugary foods like candy and sweets as well as sweet beverages, which is like practically bathing your teeth in sugar.

  • Quick Smoking and Using Tobacco

Smoking and using tobacco products interfere in the way gum tissue cells develop. Smoking excessively, thus, leads to gum disease and affects the attachment of the bone to the soft tissue. A few of the many dental consequences of smoking are teeth discoloration, bad breath, periodontal disease, oral cancer, and so on. So, make it a point to quit smoking and tobacco this year.

  • See Your Dentist Every 6 Months

When you regularly visit the dentist, the dentist will recognize the signs and symptoms of oral issues and tackle them immediately. This way, your teeth are protected from damage in the near future. Set aside a day every six months to visit the dentist.

Make these five resolutions a part of your routine, and stellar oral health is guaranteed. Here’s to a new year full of positivity, success, and healthy smiles!
